Extended Thursday: Beber staff get to know each other

After returning from Honduras, I had the honor of spending another beautiful summer on the shores of Lake Beulah in rural Wisconsin as Beber Camp’s Director of Photography.  You can see a fun sampling of images from my time at Beber in my WI PotD series.

To start the summer, the staff spent a lot of time getting to know each other.  I took advantage of these moments to explore how large groups of people translate into time and space extensions.

I also started to scout some potential spots for landscape extensions as the summer progressed.  I’ll post a few of the more successful examples next week!

Before camp’s annual trip to the Milwaukee Brewers baseball game, our Counselors in Training lead a pre-game “Tailgate” program.  Campers participated in potato sack races and had their faces painted before heading out to Miller Park.

The campers are here!!!  300 kids aged 7 to 17 joined us yesterday to start the first session of the summer.  After a week of training, our staff welcomed them with open arms, lots of energy, and a great song session to wrap up the day.

Staff week at camp has brought together 100 counselors from all over the country and around the world.  The group learned to work together and trust each other, while acquiring new skills and still having fun.  Here are a few shots from the week.

Yesterday marked the end of Leadership Week and the beginning of Staff Week here at camp.  During their training, the leadership team grew into a close-knit group while learning how to become excellent leaders and supervisors.

One of the exercises entailed putting together 15 boards of wood into a pre-defined geometric shape in shortening lengths of time.

And to wrap up the week, the group displayed their comfort and closeness by pulling off a 25-person circle sit.  It was stable enough to allow me to photograph the activity while sitting in the circle — a personal first!

After the rest of the summer’s leadership team joined the group yesterday, we celebrated a beautiful evening under the stars at the property’s newly cleared Rice Lake campground.

Yesterday’s rain inspired some creative indoor programming for the leadership team last night.  Taking our cue from the TV show “Minute to Win It”, we split into teams and tackled eight entertaining challenges.

In the “Elephant March”, Elli must use the baseball in the end of a pair of pantyhose attached to her head to knock over eight water bottles in a minute.

In the “Card Ninja”, Becky tries to flick playing cards ninja-star-style into an opened watermelon.

And in the tie-breaker “Defying Gravity”challenge, Stacey and Jacqui see who can keep three balloons aloft the longest.
