Extended Thursday: Travels to Honduras

leave a comment »

After my breakthrough with “Chicago River Winter (Extended)”, I was excited to keep the extensions concept in the back of my mind as I traveled to Honduras for a client project.  On the inside, Tegu’s factory provided a variety of graphically interesting aspects (you’ll notice that the fluorescent lighting is reminiscent of my much earlier grocery store extension).

And looking out through the loading dock, I was surprised to find dusk transforming a drab parking lot into a beautiful urban landscape.

This parking lot shot translated beautifully into a fine art print and was included in my David Strawn Gallery show.

Pittsburgh surprises

with one comment

My first visit to Pittsburgh lasted only 24 hours, but I was pleasantly surprised by the city.  Here are a few shots from my afternoon wanderings.

Honduras trip log: La Ceiba

leave a comment »

I’m finally getting to a chance to post a new update, but where to begin?

At my last post, I was waiting for my luggage to join me here in Tegucigalpa, and thankfully it arrived later that day.  We picked it up at the airport on Tuesday afternoon, headed home to repack for our trip to the North Coast, and went right back to the airport (my third time there in 24 hours).  We caught two propellor plans, enjoyed a hazy sunset on our way out, and arrived in La Ceiba late Tuesday night.

After the first of a series of painfully early 4:30 am starts, we piled into the back of a pick-up for a two hour ride out to the forest.  We stopped for breakfast at what looked to be a Honduran truck stop, and were on the trail by 8:00 am.

Let’s just say the rest of the day proved to be very adventurous in more ways than one (including pulling over a dozen ticks off of me over the next few days).  Unfortunately, I need to pack my bags and catch a flight home, so I’ll write more about our hike into the forest in my next post.

Honduras trip log: I’m here, but my luggage….

…is HOPEFULLY on its way!  Apparently my two-hour delay in Miami didn’t give American Airlines luggage handlers enough time to get my duffel from one flight to the other.  And since there’s only one AA flight from Miami to Tegucigalpa each day, I’m hoping it’s on its way as I type.  To hold me over, the airline was generous enough to give me these supplies:

More importantly, I’m here safe and sound.  Chris and Cindy are wonderful hosts and I’m excited to dive into documenting the factory workers this morning.

Views from the plane

On another trip out west, I captured a few more images out the plane window.  The first image is a sunset over the Rockies, and the ground crew shot is courtesy of one of our many delays (thanks United!).

After a long day of travel yesterday, the volunteers started seeing patients today.  Editing has barely begun, but here are a few travel shots from along the way:

A blast from the past

leave a comment »

I just discovered that the travel blog we kept during our seven month trip around the world still exists!  I thought it had been archived, and I couldn’t resist reading a few posts and browsing through the photos.  The trip started 4 years ago this week, so in honor of its anniversary I’m re-posting a few of that blog’s photos here.  Check out the blog and enjoy a trip down memory lane.
